Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings.

Why It's Significant

Ganesha is the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and the lord of beginnings. His worship before any new venture is a fundamental practice in Sanatan Dharma.

The Story

According to the Shiva Purana, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from turmeric paste and breathed life into him, setting him to guard her door. When Lord Shiva returned and was stopped by the boy, a conflict arose. Shiva severed the boy's head. Seeing Parvati's grief, Shiva replaced it with the head of an elephant and blessed him as the first deity to be worshipped.

How It's Observed

Clay idols of Ganesha are installed in homes and public pandals. Daily pujas for 1.5, 5, 7, or 10 days. On the final day, the idol is immersed in water (Visarjan) with grand processions. The chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya" fills the streets.

Maharashtra: 10-day grand celebration with massive public pandals. The Ashtavinayak temples see huge pilgrimages. In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, celebrated with equal fervor. Goa has a unique tradition of celebrating with natural clay idols.
