Devi's Insight · What few people know
Before she was a goddess, she was a river
In the Rig Veda, Saraswati is first a mighty river that nourished the land of the Vedic seers. One hymn calls her “best of mothers, best of rivers, best of goddesses”. Over time the flowing river became the flowing word, and the river-goddess became the goddess of speech, learning and inspiration.
